Week 15 - Look around! How lucky we are to be in Instructional Design right now.
It's no secret that instructional design and learning technology are here to stay. These ideas that come up week after week in our R-511 course keep us constantly on our toes as the industry, and the definitions that come with it, shift. Joshua Kim has several articles this week for our reading, but the last article I think sums up the current situation with Learning and Technology. In his article, "Career Opportunities at the Intersection of Learning and Technology: A talent shortage?" Kim shares the large number of Instructional Design positions open at the time of his job search (2018).
Kim indicates that he believes that the number of jobs available is not a fluke, and that instructional designers needed will continue to be in demand with fewer skilled people available than are needed. This puts those of us working to learn instructional design and learning technologies in a great position to not only have a variety of positions available, but also to find a great fit and not have to settle.
The positions listed are focused on the graduate school need, but there is also a need for positions in corporate areas as well. I believe this is what I'm interested in at this time, but I won't know until I've gotten deeper into the program and I can determine what the best fit will be. I also have an interest in working with K-12 teachers to improve their use of technology in learning.

Hi Kate,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your reflections, experiences and perspectives.
It's already the last week. Reading your blog, I also enjoyed being able to look back on my past learning. It felt like filling in the blanks. And, it was even better to see you often in synchronous classes. You did really well. Have a good rest of the semester and have a happy summer.
The ID/IT field is a wonderful field and I think it is a necessary discipline. However, the actual industry treatment is undervalued compared to the general engineering field. In addition, the reality is that there are not many openings. I think it's because most people still think that education ends in K-12 and college. It seems that there is still a lack of awareness about lifelong education. I don't think we've ever realized that we have to constantly acquire new skills and information. I would like to think that it is also not something we should do. I hope this class has broadened your understanding of ID/IT.
Thank you.
Best,
Sunmi
You are right Katie...this field is going to be here are growing for a long time to come. It is not a fluke, but for with society's new markets. I hope you can find you niche in the K-12 space or wherever you end up.
